The latest update on the Los Angeles Lakers trade ambitions reveals that stars D'Angello Russell and Rui Hachimura may be on their way out.

Lakers Trade Target

The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the center of high trade speculation all season, but the most credible rumor so far involves Chicago Bulls star Zach LaVine. LaVine is currently the biggest name targeted in the NBA, with speculation mounting that he's on the verge of leaving Chicago imminently.

While almost every team is monitoring the two-time All-Star to some degree, the Lakers have been the most active lately, especially after it was revealed that they're one of LaVine's four preferred trade destinations.

However, after dominating headlines for several weeks, the buzz surrounding the LaVine trade has dwindled following his recent injury. Initially expected to miss only a week of action, the situation has worsened, and LaVine might be sidelined for another 3-4 weeks. Ironically, this aligns perfectly with the January 15 date when all of last summer's free agents become trade-eligible, including many notable Lakers players.

Lakers Trade Assets

Amid perhaps the busiest offseason for any team, the Lakers orchestrated a roster revamp by signing numerous free agents. Consequently, on January 15th, the Lakers will have an excess of additional trade assets if they opt to pursue Zach LaVine.

Despite their current good form, notably reaching the NBA's first-ever in-season tournament, much of their success can be attributed to the remarkable performances of 38-year-old LeBron James, who continues to carry teams in his 21st season. While they might be hesitant to disrupt a working scheme, the Lakers could consider taking a risk by adding another certified star at the expense of some of their depth.

According to multiple NBA insiders, the frontrunners to be traded for LaVine would be D'Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura. Both players signed substantial extensions with the Lakers this summer, implying that one or possibly both would need to be involved in the trade to match the salaries.

Although LaVine stands as the biggest name on their list, The Athletic has also reported that the Lakers are monitoring various situations, including several of LaVine's teammates, and intend to remain patient throughout the trade window.

«They're still evaluating their needs and will continue to monitor the league, including potential fire sales in Toronto, Washington, Utah, Brooklyn and/or Charlotte that could make useful rotation players available.»
