The NBA World Puts Anthony Davis on Blast After Lakers First Loss

The Los Angeles Lakers couldn't kick off the 2023-24 season with a victory, suffering a 107-119 defeat at the hands of the Denver Nuggets on Opening Night. Despite some impressive moments on the court, the Lakers ultimately demonstrated that they are still not on par with the Nuggets.

Re-watch the highlights of the Lakers and Nuggets opener in the video below:

Anthony Davis Costs the Lakers the Game

The game's dynamic shifted significantly for Anthony Davis. He dominated the first half, amassing 17 points, but the second half saw a stark drop in his performance. He failed to score any points, missing all six of his field goal attempts. This inconsistency drew criticism, especially since he allowed Nikola Jokić to nearly achieve another near 30-point triple-double against them.

What's even more glaring is Davis had vowed to respond to the Nuggets' trash talk, making his underwhelming second half all the more disappointing. Social media, led by Bill Simmons, didn't spare Davis from rightful criticism.

As the anticipated leader of the team and a player often regarded as a top-10 talent in the NBA, Davis can't afford such off-nights. The Lakers' path to the NBA Finals goes through the Nuggets, and his inconsistent performances, including the previous Western Conference Finals, have raised concerns. There are no excuses; Davis simply needs to perform better.

This is Just the Beginning

Thankfully, this was merely the opening game of 82 regular-season fixtures, not a do-or-die playoff matchup in May. Nonetheless, it undeniably marks a lacklustre start for Davis. He has displayed greater potential, as evidenced by his performance in the first half. If he truly intends to lead the team, subpar showings against fellow Western Conference rivals are not allowed.

It seems that Denver's words failed to provide Davis with sufficient motivation to sustain his performance throughout the entire Opening Night. Hopefully, this showing can serve as the additional motivation he requires as the Lakers prepare to face the newly revamped Phoenix Suns this Thursday.
