Following a two-month rehabilitation period aimed at rejoining the New York Knicks, sources revealed to ESPN on Thursday that All-NBA forward Julius Randle will undergo surgery on his right shoulder, effectively concluding his season.

Since dislocating his shoulder on January 27, Randle has been sidelined, relentlessly working towards a return before the Eastern Conference playoffs. However, recent consultations with doctors revealed continued instability in the shoulder, deeming it unsafe for him to resume play this season.

Despite his efforts to avoid surgery and make a playoff comeback, visits to two specialists emphasized the inevitability of the procedure to prevent further injury and potential permanent damage, sources disclosed.

Randle's surgery is anticipated to facilitate a full recovery, aiming for a return around the commencement of the 2024-25 season. Acting swiftly to undergo surgery grants him the necessary rehabilitation period to meet that timeline.

This setback significantly impacts the Knicks, who exhibited potential for a postseason push. With a record of 44-31, New York thrived with Randle and OG Anunoby on the court together, boasting a 12-2 record and leading the league in defense during those games. Despite their absence in recent months, the Knicks sit fifth in the Eastern Conference, just one game behind the third seed.

Randle's impending return next season, alongside the retention of Anunoby, could position the Knicks as contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Having secured his third All-Star selection this season, Randle averaged 24 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5 assists per game, shooting 47%. Notably, he embarked on a career-high streak of 19 consecutive games with 20 points or more earlier in the season.

Before sustaining the injury against the Miami Heat, the 29-year-old had appeared in all 46 games for the Knicks. Randle previously earned two second-team All-NBA honors with the Knicks in 2021 and 2023.

Despite undergoing offseason ankle surgery in 2023, Randle persevered through injury to contribute to New York's late-season and playoff campaigns.
