San Antonio Spurs newcomer Victor Wembanyama will not be playing in the upcoming Monday game against the Phoenix Suns due to a sprained left ankle, with no specific timeline provided for his return.

The French 7-foot-3 center was deemed unfit to play after a morning shootaround aimed at evaluating his ankle condition. The injury occurred during a match on Saturday where the Spurs fell 131-106 to the Suns, and Wembanyama was benched in the fourth quarter as the Suns' lead widened to 32 points. In that game, he managed to score 13 points, grab five rebounds, give four assists, and block a shot in 21 minutes of play.

Update: Victor Wembanyama (ankle sprain) ruled OUT for today's game in San Antonio versus #Suns.

Wembanyama, who was the first overall pick in the previous year's draft, has been maintaining averages of 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 3.4 blocks, 1.3 steals, and 29 minutes of game time. Despite his strong performance, which places him as a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year, the Spurs are at risk of recording the worst season in their history. With a current record of 15-56, the team must secure victories in at least five of their remaining 11 games to avoid falling below the franchise's lowest-ever season record of 20-62, established in 1997. This comes as San Antonio heads into the week on a losing streak, having dropped their last three games and eight out of their last ten.

The number one pick of the 2023 Draft has a busy summer ahead. Starting with the French national team, he aims for a remarkable Olympic feat in Lille and Paris, and with the Spurs, "his" franchise. The team recently informed him that they would include him in the summer recruitment process because when you have a gem like Wemby, you cherish and satisfy him. The focus will be on which prospects to consider in the Draft, which players to target in Free Agency, and identifying the key individuals with whom Vic wishes to advance the Spurs' project. These are essentially the three main areas of the rebuild where Wemby's input will be sought and likely highly valued. Understandably, the Frenchman expressed his happiness at being entrusted with such responsibilities.

Victor Wembanyama said he looks forward to sharing his input (and is grateful the team wants him involved) once the offseason hits and the club starts pondering which direction it might take.
