The Indiana Pacers announced on Saturday that guard Bennedict Mathurin will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

The 21-year-old, averaging 14.5 points per game off the bench this season, sustained the injury during a 137-120 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday and was initially expected to be out for just three games before the diagnosis.

Surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery in Los Angeles next week. While the 2024 Rising Stars MVP is expected to make a full recovery in time for next season, his absence will be felt as the Pacers vie for a playoff spot this year.

The Pacers anticipate Mathurin's full recovery for the 2024-25 season, a promising outlook, but currently, this news is a setback for a team with formidable offensive prowess in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Mathurin's absence is a significant blow for the Pacers, losing their top bench scorer who contributes 14.5 points, four rebounds, and two assists, both on and off the ball. With Buddy Hield's departure and Mathurin's injury, Indiana's roster depth suffers, impacting their playoff chances despite their strong offensive performance.

As they compete for a playoff spot, they face a depth test, possibly needing to secure it through the play-in round, yet they remain a formidable threat in the East, albeit with diminished depth.
