Detroit Pistons and Chimezie Metu Reach Two-Year Agreement

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Pistons have inked Metu to a one-year deal with a team option for the 2024-25 season. Metu will remain with Detroit for the rest of the season following the conclusion of his 10-day contract with the team. Across six games, which included two starts, Metu has been averaging 7.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals in 25.8 minutes. The 26-year-old forward is expected to maintain his role in the Detroit rotation for the remainder of the season.

Metu has previously been part of the San Antonio Spurs and Sacramento Kings. This season, he appeared in 37 games for the Phoenix Suns before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies and subsequently waived.

Chimezie Chukwudum Metu, born on March 22, 1997, is a Nigerian-American professional basketball player currently signed with the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played collegiate basketball for the USC Trojans.

Metu attended Lawndale High School in Lawndale, California. Regarded as a four-star recruit, he was ranked No. 46 by Rivals.com. Metu committed to the University of Southern California (USC) on May 12, 2014.

Professional Path:

San Antonio Spurs (2018–2020)

Selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 49th pick in the 2018 NBA draft on June 21, 2018, Metu joined the team's 2018 NBA Summer League roster. He officially signed with the Spurs on September 4, 2018, making his NBA debut on October 20, 2018.

After two seasons with the Spurs, Metu was waived on November 20, 2020.

Sacramento Kings (2020–2023)

Metu joined the Sacramento Kings on November 28, 2020. Despite being waived after appearing in four preseason games, he returned to the team with a two-way contract two days later. His strong performance led to a multi-year deal with the Kings on April 28, 2021.

During the Las Vegas Summer League on August 15, 2021, Metu was ejected for a physical altercation. Despite the suspension for the championship game, the Kings emerged victorious.

On December 29, 2021, Metu secured a dramatic victory for the Kings with a game-winning three-pointer against the Dallas Mavericks.

Phoenix Suns (2023–2024)

Metu signed with the Phoenix Suns on July 4, 2023. On Christmas Day, he achieved a career-high double-double of 23 points and 19 rebounds off the bench.

Traded to the Memphis Grizzlies on February 8, 2024, in a three-team trade involving the Brooklyn Nets, Metu was waived the following day.

Detroit Pistons (2024–present)

Joining the Detroit Pistons on March 20, 2024, with a 10-day contract, Metu secured a longer deal for the rest of the season on March 30, 2024.
