Reports suggest that the Philadelphia 76ers are closely monitoring the situation of Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the 76ers are positioned as a keen contender for George's services, anticipating his potential entry into free agency this offseason.

"League sources say that Philadelphia continues to loom as an eager George suitor should he make it onto the open market and give the 76ers their formal opportunity to try to lure him across the country," Stein wrote. "The Sixers are said to maintain interest in George despite the widely held presumption that he and Leonard want to keep playing together in their native Southern California."

George holds a player option for the 2024-25 season but has the opportunity to decline it, potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent this summer. However, NBA insider Marc Stein has suggested that there's an ongoing expectation across the league that George will reach an agreement on a contract extension with the LA Clippers.

Throughout the 2023-24 season, George has been a key contributor for the Clippers, averaging 22.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists across 61 games. His performance has been instrumental in guiding the team to a 42-25 record, placing them in fourth position in the competitive Western Conference standings.

While George is eligible for a max contract extension with the Clippers, there's uncertainty regarding whether the franchise has extended such an offer. Given their financial constraints, particularly being "deep in the tax," the team may face challenges in extending contracts for all their star players. It's been reported that the Clippers may only be able to extend two out of their trio of stars, which includes James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and George. Notably, Leonard secured his extension in January.

"Presumably, if there was a max extension sitting around for him, he would have signed it by now," Hollinger wrote.

Should Paul George opt for free agency, the Philadelphia 76ers could emerge as an enticing destination. Currently, the team only has two players, Joel Embiid and Paul Reed, under contract for the 2024-25 season, as per Spotrac, although Tyrese Maxey is expected to receive an extension.

Despite being a consistent contender in the conference over the past few seasons, the 76ers have faced challenges advancing deep into the postseason. While they have made six consecutive playoff appearances, they have not progressed past the second round since 2001.

With George's proven ability to perform at a high level, having participated in 108 postseason games, his addition could bolster the 76ers' playoff aspirations and address their postseason hurdles. Keep an eye on Philadelphia's pursuit of George should he become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
