Entering the FIBA World Cup after coming off an Olympic silver medal and featuring NBA talents such as Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, and Evan Fournier, France was expected to make a run at winning the entire tournament hosted in Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Unfortunately, they have underachieved and have become one of the first teams eliminated at this year's tournament after back-to-back defeats in the group stage to Canada and Latvia.

Their first game resulted in a blowout loss of 95-65 to the Canadian side led by Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Although this may be the best Canadian National side ever assembled, France was expected to be competitive in that game.

Their second game, however, was much worse as they were beaten 88-86 by the underdog nation Latvia, who were missing their main star Kristaps Porzingis due to injury.

France still has one game left to play against Lebanon, but because of their two defeats already, this game will have little meaning as they are already eliminated from progressing to the group stage. After their elimination, NBA Twitter has reacted harshly and placed blame on their star player, Rudy Gobert, who plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
