As per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Mitchell Robinson, the center for the New York Knicks, has been upgraded to questionable status ahead of Wednesday's game against the Toronto Raptors. He is anticipated to be active for the match. Robinson has been sidelined since December 8th due to ankle surgery, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the season. However, his return to practice last week suggests a quicker recovery than expected.

Robinson's injury marked a significant setback for the Knicks, occurring during what could be considered the peak of his career. His exceptional rim protection bolstered the team's defense early in the season, while his prowess as an offensive rebounder sets him apart, leading the league with an average of 5.3 offensive rebounds per game. Under Tom Thibodeau's guidance, the Knicks prioritize offensive rebounding, evident in their current league-leading offensive rebounding rate. Now, with Robinson poised to return to action soon, the team looks to regain their top rebounder.

The prospect of Robinson's imminent return comes as somewhat of a surprise. Following his initial injury, the Knicks sought a disabled player exception from the NBA, typically reserved for players expected to miss the remainder of the season. However, the NBA rejected the request. Now, with Robinson's recovery progressing faster than anticipated, he is set to rejoin the team well ahead of the postseason.

On Monday, head coach Tom Thibodeau hinted that Robinson's progress outpaces that of other injured key Knicks players, including OG Anunoby and Julius Randle.

"Mitchell is moving quite well," Thibodeau said Monday. "He's cleared for contact and all that. He's going through practices and so just needs a little more time. But he's doing really well overall."

Turning 26 on April 1st, Robinson stands as one of the league's premier rebounders. Prior to his injury, he maintained averages of 10.3 rebounds and 6.2 points across 21 games, marking his third season as a starter with the Knicks and shaping up for a career-best performance before the setback.

''I felt like I was finally getting in shape to the top of my career right there,» Robinson said last week. «And the next thing you know, (I) just went down and I wanted to throw s—.''

Throughout this season, the Knicks have yet to field Robinson, Randle, and Anunoby simultaneously. The trio's collective contribution will be pivotal for any postseason aspirations. While two remain uncertain in terms of return timelines, the Knicks can at least count on their starting center for the crucial final stretch of the regular season.
