Utah Jazz's Lauri Markkanen Potentially Out for Rest of Season

Published March 31, 2024 at 11:16

Utah Jazz fans received unfortunate news on Saturday night regarding Lauri Markkanen's injury status. After several recent absences from the lineup, the one-time All-Star will now be officially sidelined for two weeks due to a shoulder impingement. Markkanen experienced discomfort in his shoulder during Wednesday's game.

With Markkanen scheduled for re-evaluation in two weeks, it's probable he'll remain sidelined for the rest of the regular season. Given Utah's elimination from postseason contention, there's no urgency to rush its star player back into action at this point.

On Saturday, the team shared an injury update on Twitter/X, disclosing Markkanen's diagnosis:

"After experiencing discomfort in his right shoulder following the 3/27 San Antonio game, Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen underwent an MRI on Friday, which revealed he re-aggrivated a previous right shoulder impingement. He will be re-evaluated in two weeks."

Having had a productive 2023-24 campaign, averaging 23.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists in 55 games with impressive shooting splits, the Jazz forward faces a two-week timeline aligning with Utah's season end. Given the team's current circumstances, it wouldn't be surprising to see Markkanen sidelined early.

With Utah's recent struggles, losing their last eight games and holding a 3-15 record since the All-Star Break, playoff hopes have faded. Now focused on the draft and awaiting the lottery outcome, Utah's priority has shifted.

Expect the Jazz to continue without their star player for the remainder of the season. They are set to play the Sacramento Kings on Easter Sunday, aiming to end their extended losing streak.
