Exclusive Report: NBA Launches Investigation into Embiid's Absence During Nuggets Game

The NBA has initiated an investigation into the sudden absence of Joel Embiid during Saturday's game against the Denver Nuggets, sources disclosed to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. Notably, Embiid was conspicuously absent from any of Philadelphia's injury reports until the 5:30 p.m. edition, coinciding with the game's commencement, when he was promptly ruled out due to knee soreness.

Leading up to the Nuggets matchup, the NBA had actively promoted the anticipated showdown between Embiid and Nikola Jokic, the league's two most recent MVPs. However, concerns arose during Embiid's pregame warmup, prompting the 76ers' medical staff to scratch him from the game. It's worth noting that the NBA has stringent guidelines for reporting player injuries and has imposed fines on multiple teams for non-compliance.

In the event an independent physician deems that Embiid could have played, the 76ers could face a $100,000 fine for violating the player participation policy. This policy, introduced for the current season, is intended to discourage teams from resting star players during prime-time games.

Embiid, sidelined once again on Monday against the Portland Trail Blazers, has not played in Denver since November 2019.

To remain eligible for end-of-season awards, including a potential second consecutive MVP trophy, he must participate in at least 65 games this season. Following Monday's absence against Portland, he can only afford to miss another five games to maintain eligibility.
