The Dallas Mavericks Give Up on Kawhi

For one brief second, there was a chance that Kawhi Leonard would leave the Los Angeles Clippers and head elsewhere in the NBA. Now that is definitely not happening and Kawhi is staying put.

One of the teams that were hoping to land Leonard in the offseason was the Dallas Mavericks. But now that Leonard isn't budging from his home on the west coast, the Mavs are planning ahead. One of their new key targets: Kyle Lowry.

Marc Stein has some input on the Mavericks:

«The Mavs' post-draft focus, sources say, will be the pursuit of Kyle Lowry (along with Miami, New Orleans and Philadelphia) and their bid to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr. Dallas was initially expected to wait and see if Kawhi Leonard gave any indication that he was open to leaving the Clippers, but the Mavericks have moved off of those plans.»

If the Mavericks really are attempting to get the Raptors' Kyle Lowry, they won't be alone. Multiple teams are trying to get Lowry, he's one of the biggest free agents this offseason. It remains to be seen who Lowry will sign with but if Dallas got him they would immediately feel his impact. They are also making the smart call by trying to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr since he was one of the strongest parts of the team this season.

The Mavericks are desperate to build a strong team around Luka Doncic. They need next season to be a major success or else they risk him starting to look elsewhere. Getting Kyle Lowry would be a huge step in the right direction.
